THE HAND'S DOWN BEST DENIM SHOP IN THE BAY AREA, MAYBE EVEN WESTERN UNITED STATES!!!!

Kiya, the owner, has researched so much and has put soo much time into how his shop is and what he sells that it shows in every nook and cranny..
Although the mirrored dressing room kinda makes you feel insecure, the jeans that you walk out in are some of the best jeans available in the world.
Anyone that is into raw denim knows that Self-Edge delivers better jeans than some of the top denim boutiques in the West Coast!!

One of the best, if not THE BEST denim shop in all of the Western Hemisphere.

With a laid back denim expert owner and staff it's always a pleasure stopping by the shop and talking denim and clothing.

Stopped by yesterday and was reminded why I like this store so much.  Sure, the merchandise speaks for itself but the owner and staff (Kiya, Derek and Clay) keep me coming back for reproductions of classic American workwear and denim.

A lot of the quality and handiwork is lost on many neighborhood residents thinking this is just another cutesy boutique, but Self Edge's devotion to high-quality handmade apparel and accessories make this the only destination between Tokyo and New York with such a uniquely premium selection.

It's stores like these that make me wish that I had more money.  Self Edge will be my window shopping destination for the next year until I A) win the lotto B) bag a super high paying job or C) Kiya becomes my best friend and shares the love with me (no homo).

Oh, and big ups for showing love to those with waists bigger than 32/34 inches.

The Flat Head.
Iron Heart.

You probably won't find these brands ANYWHERE in the US - at least not for less than $450+ a pair, yet here is Self Edge selling them for less than Evisu (barf!) prices.

The staff (Kiya, Clay, etc.) are very knowledgable about denim, are extremely friendly, and really try to find you a pair that best suits you.

They offer chain-stitch hemming free with every pair you purchase there ($15 normally). I've had 3 pairs hemmed and it's quality.

My only complaint is that I think I've spent nearly $2K here, but I have 4 pairs of denim, a chambray button-up, 2 wallet chains, and a wallet that will last my lifetime.

Kids, wash your denim infrequently (hold off at least for a few months after your first soak), and don't be afraid to treat them like shit. They'll hold up and look great.

I will not apologize for my dinkiness.

H o w e v e r, thank you Self Edge, for hemming my jeans with your clean, flattering Chain Stitching; doing it with a comfortable greet and smile; and for 15 measly bucks.

I will not apologize for my deficient coolness, albeit half-eyed expected, walking in.  I mean, how could I not?

There are some things in this world the exude elegance and quality, such as single-malt Scotch, European sports cars and Swedish models.

Sugar Cane jeans are yet another example of elegance and quality, something I have learned, thanks to Self Edge. Modeled after vintage Levi jeans, Sugar Cane jeans are designed to be durable and adaptable to their owner.

I picked out a pair of Okinawa Sugar Cane jeans, which are supposed to fade into vibrant colors. They fit like a glove and feel like a million bucks. They better, they nearly cost that much.

Self Edge hems the jeans for you with the same cross-stitching method employed by Sugar Cane, so my boot cut looks just as fly as when I tried them on the first time.

If you're looking for quality jeans, this is where you should be going.  There's a million different brands and cuts in the world of jeans but Kiya takes the work out of it and offers only the best of the best.

Most of the denim is dark-washed because denim will fade by itself so why not let it develop it's own cool fade just by wearing it?  It's definitely a plus and the fit ends up being better anyway.

The people there definitely know their stuff about denim and will size you up and everything.

I came in looking for a pair of Nudies for my girlfriend.  I bought them in the right size and they even offered to hem them for free if I needed to later.  The pricing is definitely reasonable on jeans considering how much you'd have to pay if you got it sourced through a proxy from Japan or elsewhere.  I have a couple pairs of jeans from Self-Edge and I love them all.

I have a surly, old family friend who has a simple piece of advice about consumer product purchasing: "don't buy shit."  And if you make a jeans purchase at Self Edge, you can be certain that what you are getting is decidedly un-shitty.

The world of high-priced denim in a scary, complicated one.  There are hundreds of labels with price tags that creep up into the 3-digits, and who has time to sort through what's good and what is really just lipstick on a pig for $300?  Thankfully, Self Edge has done the work for you and selected only brands that are built to last.

That all said, this place isn't for everyone.  The jeans generally fit slim and when you first put on a pair of Iron Hearts, for example, you will not be comfortable.  In fact, you probably won't be comfortable for the first couple weeks you wear them.  The philosophy here is that you'll get something stiff and durable and like a sturdy pair of boots, the jeans will conform to you over time.  So, know that going in and know that the prices are high and the fits can be a little intimidating.

But someone like Kiya, the owner, makes the selection process pretty painless.  He gave me about 10 pairs of jeans to try on and offered laid back, low pressure feedback.  When I'd made my decision, he measured me for the free hemming and said to come back in a week to pick up my new gear.

And now, I'm quite happy with the purchase.  Sure, most of the jeans here won't have that "ready-to-wear" feel or be the strategically ripped, washed and scuffed denim you'll find at other high-priced jeans shops.  But, that's not really their angle.  Self Edge is here to be sure you "don't buy shit" and instead get something that will last you for years.

I didn't realize how small this place was until I came with my son who is an avowed raw denim fan!  Having spoken with Kiya (one of the founders/owners) the day before on a new pair of jeans Self Edge collaborated with Imperial, we dropped by to pick up another pair of jeans for my son.  Needless to say, my son was not disappointed in the least!  He goes here with his buddies who also like raw denim.

The store is all about denim with a small selection of cool looking button shirts for guys and an even smaller selection for gals (upstairs through the curvy staircase).  The service is very good and personable.  One negative would be there is only one dressing room ~ even in the store's small footprint you could have another spot for changing clothes otherwise you end up waiting....

Funny thing about those cool looking button shirts for the guys....the hubby has originals in his closet from 20+ years ago and they are in great shape still (Ralph Lauren, etc.)....funny how styles come and go and come back again!

This is a great store if you happen to be into expensive streetwear. They specialize in raw selvage jeans from Japan, along with assorted cool tops and outerwear. However, it's really the jeans that this store is known for.

Many of the jeans are cut based on old Levi's 501 silhouettes...I didn't know the fit and design of 501s had changed over the years, but they have, with many of the "classic" cuts coming from the mid 1900s. I found out that there's a whole subculture around selvage jeans which I found to be quite fascinating.

After some further research on the internet, I ventured into the city to check it out. I tried a few pairs on and was impressed with the heavy weight denim. They just felt much more sturdy and robust than the mall jeans I had become accustomed to. In fact, they reminded me of the very first pair of 501s I ever owned many moons ago, a pair I wore until they were just too shredded to be presentable.

Naturally such premium denim came with a premium price tag, but I knew that going in and once I tried them on I was hooked. I ended up with a pair of Sugar Cane's, which actually contain sugar cane fibers in the weave and are based on the 501 cut from 1947. They are currently my favorite pair of jeans, and I've since donated my other jeans to salvation army. I plan to purchase a couple more pairs, but as mentioned they're not cheap so I've got to check under all the chair cushions for any spare change I can find.

All in all, a wonderful store catering to very niche market, but serves that market exceptionally well.

Try coming here with a guy who is a denim specialist and not leave without a pair of $300 jeans. It was impossible for me. And HE was the one who wanted to check this place out in the first place and left empty handed.

This place is quite small, and won't have jeans for everyone, but if you do have a great appreciation for fine denim and extremely unique details in the craftmanship of your jeans, then you will most likely find something you'll like here (and are willing to pay for it). They specialize in Japanese denim, raw (too stiff for my liking) and organic dyes and carry brands like Sugar Cane, Imperial, Iron Heart, Skull Jeans, Triple Works, Nudie, and The Flat Head. I tried on a pair of bootcut Sling & Stones, which has 24K thread and hardware that fit like no other pair of jeans I own. I am really picky about jeans, and have a hard time finding ones that fit me well. And well, these were hot! (btw, a percentage of Sling & Stones' profits are used to immunize villagers in Peru, fight teen suicide in Japan, and build an orphanage and youth rehabilitation center in India - tres cool!)

Their typical inseam is 34", which of course means at least 4" need to be cut off to fit me. Fortunately, Self Edge offers complimentary hemming. They have a vintage Union Special Chainstitcher, which is really cool because with a chainstitch, the hem will form a beautiful roping effect after time due to the opposite pull of denim during washing.

The two owners there were pretty helpful, though I think they weren't quite selling the jeans to me as much as my guy was.

I took the plunge into the world of selvage denim.... now I don't think I'm ever going to be coming up for air.  As someone who appreciates stealthy fashion, this place is great.  The denim here doesn't separate itself through flashy or recognizable labels or pockets, but rather through construction and appreciation for the old way of manufacturing.  Small batch denim allows for a truly personal pair of jeans once you've worn them through....

The thing I like most about my experience here is that the workers truly understand their audience.  You're there for an obvious reason and are there to help you on your journey rather than telling you which way to go, which is often a hinderance at other high end boutiques.

Until I set foot in this store, I could never have imagined that I would ever look at a pair of $300 jeans with anything other than mild horror.

Kiya, the owner, walked me through the whole thing....from the rivet placement to the deadstock vintage zippers; from the different weights of denim to the merits of slim vs. skinny....and dammit if I'm not hooked.

Two pairs of Flat Heads later, anything less feels like I'm wearing pajama pants.

The attention to detail of SE's products is matched only by their attention to detail of the store....everything from a period-correct chandelier from the 1800s to the fact that they are located just blocks away from the original Levis factory. Self Edge IS denim.

MEN ARE THE NEW WOMEN THEY TELL ME...BUT I SAY MEN ARE THE NEW BOTTOMS.

And if you are looking for a pair of great fitting jeans for you bottoms then you have hit the jackpot. The place definitely carries brands you wouldn't find anywhere else. It is a bit pricey but a good investment for that dressy party or a night out strutting Bambi style to hit the clubs.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The store although small actually works well for what they offer since their focus is on denim which for the most part is high end.

Short:

Five stars for being one of a handful of locations in the US to actually carry ultra-premium Japanese raw denim.
Five stars for converting me into a believer of the sentiment that not all jeans are created equal.
Five stars for being a spectacular church devoted to the worship of jeans:

Our Lady of Denim of San Francisco.

One of a kind; you will find nothing else like it in the western United States. The staff and owners know more than you do about jeans, and carry exactly what you need to achieve spiritual wholeness, through the highest order of jeans

Amen.

I wish I could wear the jeans in this store, they have some absolutely gorgeous denim in here that you are not going to find anywhere else. Alas, the women's selection leans more to the pencil thin heroin addict demographic than the middle-aged Volvo driving mom.**

My husband, on the other hand, looks like he's ready to go on tour in his Iron Heart denim. RAWR! I can still appreciate the goods, I just can't wear them.

**p.s. Self Edge, if you carried some of those jeans in a slightly more forgiving cut (I cannot wear the second-skin straight leg cut and I refuse to wear the low riders anymore), I would buy them. I'll bet I'm not the only hipster mama out there either....

Read about this place in a newspaper, hubby wanted to come.  Not really our style of denim.  This is the raw denim you can imagine super hip guys and dolls wearing.  The kind that is really stiff and you wear it with your coolest leather jacket.
We could totally appreciate the love and pride that goes into this store.  Plus, the gentleman working was very nice and told us about other cool shops in the area.

Self Edge is only 1 of 2 stores in the US that carry Japanese raw denim.  The other is Blue in Green in NY.  If you knew that already, then you probably know what they sell here too.  Samurai, Sugarcane, Iron Heart, Flathead, Nudie, and Skull 5010s and 5507s.  All their cuts are either Levis vintage reproductions (WWII period worker jeans, think loose and high rise) or skinny cuts, except for the Nudies.

The atmosphere is very elitist and hipster.  You walk in there and you can sense that the workers are making mental notes of what you are wearing.  They are very patient, very nice, and very helpful, but  you can't help but think that they think they are better than you.  I'm not accusing them of that, but its just how it feels.  How else can you feel if the everyone in the room is wearing $300 jeans, and you are wearing your $50 gaps?  Unless of course you're already wearing these jeans when you go in, then you'll have a great conversation with them about your honeycombs, whiskers, fading, soaking, etc etc....

Their dressing room is a curtain wrapped around the corner of the room, with mirrors for walls.  So wear good looking underwear.

Upstairs, I couldn't tell which clothes were for guys and which for girls.

With some effort and a lot of research, you can buy these same jeans directly from Japan without their 20% markup.  But you'd have to wait a week or two for shipping, you wouldn't be able to try it on, and returns would be a bitch.  Plus will a pain in the ass translating and communicating with stores from Japan.  So consider the 20% markup a convenience fee.

They just got a chain stitching machine too so now you can get them to chain stitch your hems!  Awesome.

If you don't know what you're looking for, this place probably isn't for you.  But if you do, then this is the only place to try before you buy, besides NY!

I left Self Edge feeling bummed out.  Maybe my expectations were too high, or my current wardrobe too bland, but my experience was underwhelming.

Read a few other reviews and did a little research before stopping by.   I was intrigued by the passion I hoped would be shared for a fairly niche market.   I'm a huge supporter of local merchants who combat the big box stores by focusing on a product or service they completely love.  Whether its clothes, coffee, books or kitchen knifes...obsessive compulsive devotion to something is a great quality.

Walked in, no one else there and started to browse the selection.  Not much acknowledgment from the guy behind the desk.  After a couple of minutes he commented "Those are men's jeans from Japan.  We have other sizes."  That's it.   Er..ok.  Thanks.

I could probably have asked a few questions, maybe tried something on, but the Karma just felt all mis-aligned.  No way I was going to buy a pair of jeans that might carry negative vibes.  Decided it wasn't meant to be and walked out.

I did really like the layout of the store, very simple and clean.  The denim I looked at on the rack was really interesting.  Three star worthy just cuz I'm impressed with the effort it took to import the jeans and get the place going.

Yes, the prices are high, but it's all relative.  Show me you care about your product and customers...I'll support you.  You've done 99% of the work getting me into store already.

I didn't know jack about different stitching, types of denim or riveting.  Honestly, I left Self Edge with exactly the same level of knowledge. Oh well, guess I'll roll with the less hip but more friendly Lucky crowd.

Reasons why Self Edge makes me happy:

1)  I've  kinda always hated Married to the Mob but fuck do I ever love that Men are the new Women shirt (wearing it right now, SWOOOSH!).

2)  The guys who work there are eye candy.

3)  The three times I've gone in, I have had a glass of alcohol with me.  I just set it down and do my thing and they've never once been like "girl, you need to take that outside."  That is important to me.  Sunday's are for drinking, shopping, and eating whatever you want.  If you fuck that up for me I'm not going to shop at your store.

4)  Check out the denim!!!!!!  Wait?  I don't even have to wash them????? EVER???? OMMGG!!!!!  I HATE DOING LAUNDRY!!!

Ok so anyway they also have a really information packed website, check it out if you're interested in going to the store.

A++ WOLUD BUY AGAIN!

Also, read Dan V.'s review because it is more useful than mine.

I was intimidated to go to Self Edge. Reading the reviews on yelp, and hearing about it around town, I figured I wasn't denim enough or whatever. I just wanted a pair of raw denim jeans to make my own, I didn't need to make a statement to the underground denim community about my worthiness or whatever. But I went anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised. Not so stoked to show off my underwear when trying the jeans on, but it's a small price to pay. The guy behind the counter was nice and very helpful, unlike the girl at Villians who tried to tell me everything I already knew about dry denim like I was an idiot who walked in wearing no pants at all. Dude was very nice about explaining the difference between the Japanese denim and non Japanese denim and what to expect from my pair.

So if you're intimidated by Self Edge, don't be. All those guys who left yelp reviews below making you feel unworthy were the same ones who ate lunch in the bathroom in high school, they're just trying to make themselves feel part of the in-crowd now. Who cares what they think, anyway.

It's dark, RAW, and decadent!

Yesiree folks, that's how I like my denim and Self Edge is all about dark raw denim.

They have all the crazy over the top dark rinse, ridiculously expensive Japanese denim you could ever want.

And now for a prayer:

Dear God, thank you so much for not letting my booty fit into the last pair of Sugar Cane boot cuts today, you just saved me $300!   Amen.

I have to give Self Edge credit, just for being daring and opening a store carrying high-end, hard-to-find denim. The owners really know their blue, having sought out brands like Okinawa, Sugar Cane, and Samurai. The price tags might make you wince, but last time I checked we only have one lifetime on this planet.

Take the spiral staircase upstairs to find a smattering of hipster hoodies and tees. Some styles spoke to me more than others, but again, I like when people attempt to shake up our sometimes drab fashion sensibilities.

Special props for carrying one of my favorite lines Mama, and as well as Married to the Mob, makers of the somewhat infamous t-shirt with the "Man is the New Woman" tagline on it.

I haven't yelped in a long time, but this place is worth writing about. I am a Japan fan and read about the denim cult before. Yesterday I finally had a change to visit Self Edge. If you are looking for the ultimate jeans you will find it here. The service was excellent. Karen and I chatted for a while with the owner about Japan, rare sneakers and denim.
I tried a couple of jeans and really like the limited edition (150 pairs) Triple Works ($250) they have right now. Since I want reduce my impulse buying I left the store without them. But I will be back.

From the store window, I had to do a double-take- didn't know what it was until I went in and asked if they had women's jeans - they were VERY helpful- plus let us park our bikes inside & let my crazy dog run around the store while we checked out the jeans.
The sales associates were awesome- waited on us and when I asked for something in my size and body type (which is rare to find), I got a reply "I picked them out myself"- Having someone size you up a size smaller than you think you are and having the jeans in that size actually fit well, was a dream come true. I had several pairs that I loved to choose from, so I chose and got rung up. They gave me the best service and now I own my latest favorite pair of jeans.

From now on I'll be buying all of my designer jeans there.

i went there to get my levis hemmed.  the guy there had me put them on, and then marked them as i stood in front of the mirror.   seemed straightforward enough.

when i got them back, however, i noticed that one of the legs was a bit longer than the other.  not a big deal, because you can't really tell when you're wearing them.  the bigger deal for me was that the stitching was done with a string that was nowhere close to the rest of the stitching on the jeans.  argh.   i'm tempted to buy another pair of raw denim levis and start over.

denim afficionados will tell me not to bother with levis, but i ain't paying 2-300 for a pair of jeans.

These guys are serious about their commitment to high-end Japanese denim. I respect anyone's dedication to their obsession. This store has a rigorous customer profile: the rich, japanese-reproduction-denim addict, and the woman who loves him.

To everyone else: unless you're laundering money this probably isn't your joint. Sparse selection of boring hipster uniforms upstairs plus multiple isotopes of ridonkulous reproduction jeans downstairs. Yes they're rare, Japanese-emulating-American, hard-to-find brands. Yawn *blink.*

I beeing a cocktail geek and movie nerd can apprecitate people who are passionate about what they do, and man did the guy running this store love his dennim.  He was able to discuss every pair of jeans what they were made of, how many pairs were produced, what kind of dye and how much die was used in each pair.  Very immpressive knowlege of his product.
I wouldn't dream of spending three bills on a pair of pants but when i tried them on they looked good, felt good and seemed like a natural fit, alas they were three bills so i had to pass.

I have a feeling that some of the people who reviewed Self Edge don't know anything about denim, and they don't know why it's priced as such, etc.

In all honesty Self Edge is by far the best store for jeans anywhere in San Francisco (or the bay area, for that matter)
Self Edge carries all of the good japanese denim brands that you can't find anywhere else--Samurai, Skull, The Flat Head, Iron Heart (and more)
I got a pair of Skulls there and the stitching start to come off after a month or so--Kiya (the owner) is fixing it for me for free, and they even offered to replace my jeans. Of course I don't want to replace them...I've only been wearing them about a month!

All of the people who work at Self Edge are NOT pretentious as all, and they are very willing to help.
I reccomend going to this store if you want a pair of really nice raw jeans. 21oz denim, mmmm. Selvedge, mmmm.

By the way (I don't know if anyone else posted this...) "Self Edge" is a spinoff of the word "Selvedge"
Gooddddddddddd.

I was looking for a new pair of denim since fashionable well cut jeans have become a staple in my wardrobe.  I went to Self Edge and tried on about 10 different styles and fit of denim (jeans?!) before selecting a pair just to be sure of the cut/style I wanted.  The staff was super-knowledgeable about the make, fit and wear of the denim they carry.  I left with a lovely pair of Sling & Stones that I wear all the time.  I don't even like my old Diesel, Seven, Citizens, Paper Cloth etc styles...you wear these jeans once and they stretch, lose their fit etc. until you wash them then they fade and look old old old.  The raw denim of the Sling & Stones keeps it's shape and requires minimum maintenance - a soak when needed (staff can give you recommendations).  I've been wearing these jeans straight for awhile and they still fit and look great!

I even learned a bit about raw and selvedge denim.  I also went back a couple of weeks later for a pair of Iron Army and A HOME RUN hoody that I love.  This place Rocks!  Great place to find something nice for a guy if you're shopping for someone.  Something unique...

*And i'm not a bridge and tunnel pseudo-hipster blah blah blah.  This place is in my hood yo.

So I finally moved up from my Banana Republic Jeans to a pair of Sugar Canes that should be ready for pick up on Friday.  I read a lot about Self Edge and I finally made my way there after weeks of frustration of trying to find quality jeans that will go over my big-ass thighs.  If you are 5-7 and weigh 170 pounds, don't go to American Rag for jeans!!!  Derrick was able to drop some knowledge on the different brands, the quality of raw denim and suggest a couple of pairs that would fit.  Sure enough, close to $380 bucks later- I found my first pair (Sugar Canes)!  Jeans will last you years, so think beyond the big price tag plus these are jeans that most people won't have and that makes me, I mean you special.  They also carry clothing from Upper Playground and others.  Check them out!

Self Edge crew, please carry more options for the big legged dudes!!!

I can't add anything that hasn't been said in the previous 21 reviews.

Self Edge is one of two stores in America for denim snobs who obsess over Japanese jeans.  If you want to see this culture, understand it, touch it, and invest in it, you have to go here.  Period.
